WINTER SOLSTICE

We gather around the fire

Not warm but hot tonight

For these words from our seer

She has sat for days

Alone and quiet receiving

Gifts of wisdom and given

Of her soul that which she could

In return and gratefulness

She raises her gaze from the blaze

And invokes a blessing

For each of us regardless of

Deeds or error past

Welcoming each into our circle as equals

Through fixed gaze she begins

Recitation of gifts she received

From spirits and elements

Giving thanks to each in their turn

Fire wind rain from which

Everything comes

Our sustenance given in it’s time

Springing forth from spirits below

The animals who offer their lives

So that we may live

Dogs who protect and warn

Cats who protect us from vermin

Both give us warmth and company

On cold nights and warm days alike

The water that flows nearby

Fish plants cleansing and drink

The sun and moon who light our way

And tell us when this time has come

The fire spits and flares in answer

A sign from the other side

Ancestors no doubt at play

Reminding us as well

Of the mother from which we came

And father whose spirit joined her

The old seer begins to moan we follow

We are brought back to here and now

Our place of staying until

We join the others in the distance

She rubs her hands and holds

Them to her brow

In deep otherworldly voice

Exhales her final sound

Asante Sana
