VISITORS

After the fog recedes

The brain kind

Cats get fed birds too

Last night’s cooking gear

Put back amazing how much

For such a simple meal

Sit down with a coffee

To do whatever is

In fashion these days

Used to be the paper

Crinkling in my hands

And piling up in corners

That one moment

The first question is asked

Of myself or from my spouse

And it’s off to the races

Back in the day

Driving back home from

The grandparents house

I’d look out the back

Of the station wagon

On old route 6

The leaves would scatter

Then whirl back together

Behind the old wooden

Plymouth station wagon

A boat wake of leaves

It must have been fall

But I don’t remember

One of the first times

I stared off into space

I guess but why

That exact memory

It chooses to revisit me

From time to time

There must be something

Now that feels like then

And all the other times

The swirling leaves return

The crinkle of the paper

Visits me again today

Another one of those

Why things maybe

A what one
