WOLF MOON

It is the deep snow time

When the deer and moose

Lie quietly under the pines

All is still movement muffled

By drifts of powder weighted bow

Ice on ponds tree branches

Crackling in the night

All illuminated by the

Bright orb passing overhead

Bringing day to night

It would be a time for sleep

If not for the depth of hunger

Pulling and tugging within

A howl pierces the muffled night

A cry of longing and need

We all join in as is our way

Our blood begins to surge

Instinct moves us out

Into the bright cloudless night

Our pups follow for a time

Then retreat back to the hollow

Their first year

A time to observe

When the sun returns

Warmth to our world

It will be the time for learning

Now they must wait

We move in line at first

Mimic leader’s stops and starts

Listening and sniffing the air

For signs of warm brothers

Who provide for us all

Frozen in mid step

For a time then moving closer

We spread apart connected

By sight alone step by

Careful step
